1. CAVENDISH ELECTION RESULTS: On Nov. 8, 703 registered voters cast ballots. Hillary Clinton was the presidential choice with Sen. Leahy and Congressman Welch also receiving the majority of the votes. Other winners were Alice Nitka, Mark Donka, and Alison Clark for State Senate for Windsor County. While Nitka and Clark both won, the third seat went to Dick McCormick. For state rep, while Stuart Lindberg was the winner in Cavendish, the majority ultimately went to Annmarie Chirstensen.

Cavendish needed to elect seven Justices of the Peace (JP). With only one name on the ballot, the day before the election, eight people said they were interested in the position as write-ins. With 700 ballots needing to be hand counted for these slots, it took quite a while for Cavendish to report the results of the election. The JPs elected are as follows: Wendy Regier, Dan Churchill, Sara Stowell, Barbara Dickey, Richard Svec, Janelle Wilfong, and Ginger Wilk. For more information on local election results go to The Dish.

 • Deer Season Nov 12-27: Rifle season is from Nov. 12-27. Hunters are allowed to take one buck. The deer population is estimated at 145,000 right now and with last year's mild winter, officials say they're hearing from people who are definitely seeing them. A reminder from Fish & Wildlife to please wear orange if you're out in the woods to make sure you stay safe.

• Hunters Participating in Vermont's 16-day rifle season:  Biologists are collecting middle incisor teeth from November season deer in order to evaluate regional differences in ages and antler characteristics of bucks. The teeth also will help estimate population size, growth rate, health, and mortality rates. Each tooth will be cross-sectioned to accurately determine the deer's age, and the results will be posted on the state's Fish & Wildlife website next spring. Hunters who don't make it to a biological reporting station are asked to obtain a tooth envelope from their regular reporting agent, remove one the middle incisor teeth, and include their name, Conservation ID number and date of kill on the envelope.

State Sen. Bill Doyle Does Not Win Re-Election: Doyle, Vermont's longest-serving state senator, was first elected to the Vermont Senate from Washington County in 1968, and since that time has been re-elected 23 times. He is know for his yearly survey, “Doyle Poll,” of what is of concern to Vermont voters. Doyle is requesting a recount. VPR

Break-ins Continue: There are continuing reports of Cavendish and surrounding town businesses and restaurants being broken into-Table 19 again on Oct. 30 and the Royal Diner in Springfield on Oct. 31. Please take precautions with your home and business.

Cavendish Ghost Stories & Other News from CHS: The Cavendish Historical Society recently posted their annual Halloween tale-“Ghost Stories of Cavendish: Charlie.”  along with the Nov. 1 Cavendish Briefs

Unified School District Becoming a Reality/TRSU and Act 46: Two Rivers Supervisory Union (TRSU) Act 46 Study Committee consultant Steve Dale talked about the impact of Act 46 on local education during a public hearing recently. He said the act includes greater equity across the state, a strengthening and retaining of small schools as part of larger districts, and is an attempt to temper the rising cost curve of education per child and create flexibility in the administration of the education system. The Study Committee is charged with not only advising the towns of Chester, Mt. Holly, Andover, Plymouth, Cavendish, Baltimore and Ludlow on the best feasible plan that will give a quality education to all students pre-k through 12, but must also explain the outcome of the plan to make rational sense to taxpayers. There are tax incentives if the schools unify on their own accord prior to fiscal year 2017, and if they create a plan for meeting the guidelines set out by the State Agency of Education. A proposed plan drafted by the Two Rivers administrative committee, with suggestions from teachers and students, is: two pre-kindergarten through 5th grade schools located in Ludlow and Mt. Holly, two kindergarten through 5th grade schools located in Cavendish and Chester-Andover, and one middle school comprising grades 6 to 8 at Black River Middle School. GMUHS would be the regional high school for all towns in the TRSU. Vermont Journal  A public hearing was held on Nov. 1 at Ludlow Elementary. The Chester Telegraph has a report on responses at this meeting as a more in-depth discussion about a unified school district.

More Heating Help for Low-Income Vermonters: Last winter the average LIHEAP benefit was about $700. This year it's $865.The state estimates it'll get about $19 million in federal funds, which will help more than 21,000 families in the state. The state says Vermonters will get the higher benefit this year because fuel prices have stayed steady and fewer families have asked for help. The money will start being issued in a couple weeks. WCAX

Developer Selling Okemo and Other Ski Resorts: A Florida-based real estate investment trust has reached an agreement to sell more than a dozen major ski resorts and other properties from Maine to California, including Okemo Mountain in Ludlow. Under the deal, New York hedge fund manager Och-Ziff would assume ownership of 14 properties currently held by CNL Lifestyle Properties.  Skiers won’t see a big impact. Long-term leases will remain in place, so mountain operators will remain unchanged after the properties changes hands. From a skier’s perspective, it’s akin to a home mortgage being sold between banks. Rutland Herald

 3. 3RD ANNUAL ABUNDANCE SWAP: With the extra hour we gain on Sunday, consider putting aside some items for the 3rd Annual Abundance Swap, which is on Saturday December 3.

There were lots of wonderful presents that people picked up for friends, families and even themselves at last year’s Abundance Swap so we’re expecting even more amazing stuff this year. The rules are simple:

• Pick 3-5 items in your home, shop or office that someone would enjoy as a gift. These should be in really good shape and of quality, meaning it’s well made and likely to be valued by someone. Children are encouraged to bring gently used toys they may have outgrown or no longer use. Do not bring items that are damaged, broken or do not work.

• Bring them to the Cavendish Town Elementary School on Saturday morning, December 3, starting at 9:30 am.

• Drop off your items, enjoy a visit with your neighbors and the Cavendish Connects team, as well as share the stories of what you are bringing to the swap.

• From 10-11:30, select presents for someone on your holiday giving list (it can be you).

Need some help in sorting out what to bring to the swap? Check out the post we did on the KonMari Method for tidying
