1. TOWN WARNINGS/ACTIVITIES -MARCH TOWN MEETING
• Warning Annual Meeting for Cavendish Fire District #2: Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 at the Cavendish Town Office. FMI
• Articles for Cavendish Town Meeting March 3: On Monday, Jan. 26, the Cavendish Select Board finalized the Articles for March 3 Cavendish Town Meeting. The first three articles are similar to previous years -election of town officers; acceptance of the 2014 Town Report; and tax collection policies. Articles 6 and 7 are also similar: adopt the Fiscal Year 2015/2016 Budget and to transact any other business. Article 4 asks the voters to decide if the cemeteries should be placed under the Selectmen. Article 5 relates to the use of the $18,069 surplus from the FY 2013/2014 budget. FMI
• Petitions Filed for Town Elected Positions: Monday, Jan. 26 at 5 pm was the deadline for filing a petition to hold an elected office. Voting for these positions will be by Australian ballot on Tuesday, March 3 at the Cavendish Elementary School from 10-7 in the Arts Room. All candidates are running un opposed. In order to win by write-in, a minimum of 10 write-ins is required. If positions remain unfilled after the election, the Select Board or the School board will name a person for the position. FMI

Police Chase in Cavendish: On 1/25/2015 at approximately 11:45 PM, a Chester Police officer conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Route 103 North and Smokeshire Road in the Town of Chester. As the officer approached the vehicle on foot, the vehicle sped off reaching speeds in excess of 95 MPH. The vehicle was pursued into the Town of Cavendish where the vehicle crashed into a snow bank at the intersection of Main Street and High Street. A foot pursuit ensued which ended with Joey R Bergeron of Perkinsville, VT being taken into custody for an active warrant. Bergeron also faces charges of Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Excessive Speed, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and several counts of Violations of Conditions of Release. Black River Today Ceases Publication: On January 18, the following was posted to the on-line publication Black River Today: Due to health problems, I have decided that I can no longer maintain the Black River Today blog to the level of satisfaction it deserves. Consequently, this will be the last post to the blog.
Super Bowl Message from VT State Police: As Super Bowl Sunday approaches and football fans across the country prepare for the game, the Vermont State Police are joining the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Governors Highway Safety Program and the National Football League (NFL) to spread the message about designating a sober driver on Super Bowl Sunday, because - Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk. The State Police will have additional enforcement for Super Bowl Sunday.
Credit Union Robbed in Springfield: Springfield VT Police are looking for a man who held up the Windsor County Credit Union in Springfield on Wednesday. The robbery happened just before 11:30 am and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken. The man allegedly had a weapon although it was not displayed when the suspect demanded cash. The man was described as a white male approximately 20-30 years of age, 5’6” 120-130 lbs. and of a slender build. At the time he was wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and black footwear and has a clean appearance. USDA Revises Maple Syrup Grading with Descriptive Terms: The U.S. Department of Agriculture is revising the grading standards for maple syrup to match international standards so that consumers have a better understanding of what they are buying. The revisions do away with Grade B classification and now include more descriptive color and flavor classes, allowing darker syrup to make the Grade A classification. Grade A will now include four new color and flavor classes for maple syrup, ranging from golden color and delicate taste to very dark and strong taste. WCAX

CAVENDISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S ANNUAL MEETING : The Annual Meeting of the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) will take place on Saturday, Feb. 28, 5 pm at Gethsemane Episcopal Church’s Parish Hall, located off Depot Street in Proctorsville. Activities include a potluck supper, followed by a short meeting and a Hands-on-History Workshop, starting at about 6:30.
The workshop will include a brief history of the Irish in Cavendish and learning to make a St. Brigid Cross and various Celtic knots. This event is free and open to the public. FMI: margoc@tds.net or 802-226-7807
4. CAVENDISH TO HOST WORKSHOP ON HEAT PUMP TECHNOLOGY : Are you fed up with the high cost of heating your home? Are you ready to look into alternatives? The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association in conjunction with the Town of Cavendish will host a heat pump workshop on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. in the town office meeting room, 37 High Street in Cavendish.
The workshop will include a presentation by representatives of Prudent Living Homes and of Brite Lite Electric of Windsor, VT who will talk about how air-to-air and ground source heat pumps work and why they can be an effective heat source for a climate such as ours in Vermont. While no one can predict all his or her future housing concerns, energy consumption should be at the top of the list. Heat pumps can cool a house in summer, and warm it in winter, and each owner can recognize an immediate payback in comfort and significant energy bill savings, while lowering his or her carbon footprint.
The presentation will be both informational and educational, focusing on the steps to take in order to make homes more energy efficient with new technology. There will be plenty of time for Q & A and at the end of the workshop you will understand more about the way your home uses energy and one way that you can use to make it more efficient.

5. NET METERED SOLAR FOR THOSE ON LUDLOW ELECTRIC AND GMP: On Jan. 27, Proctorsville residents Craig and Jess Goodman hosted a workshop at their restaurant American Pie Pizza in Ludlow with SunCommon. During this program, it was made clear that those who are on Ludlow Electric are eligible for net metered solar and in fact there is a Ludlow community solar project underway that is being headed by Tesha Buss of Good Commons. If you are a Ludlow Electric customer and are interested in the Ludlow Community Solar project or net metering at your property, contact Tesha at 802-672-1859.
On February 11, from 5:30-7:30 pm, the Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Clean Energy Mixer with Good Commons in Plymouth. According to Mariji Graff of the Chamber, the community is invited to attend this event. Learn more at the Chamber’s website.
SunCommon, which is not currently providing their net metering services to Ludlow Electric customers, will be in attendance at the Considering Home Solar Workshop in Chester on Feb. 3. The Cavendish Energy Committee helped to plan this workshop. FMI
6. EVENTS: Kick off for the Super Bowl (Sunday, Feb. 1) is at 6:30 pm and will be carried live on NBC. On Feb 3 (Tuesday) the Cavendish Community Luncheon will take place at noon at Gethsemane Church. That evening at 7 pm there will be a “Considering Home Solar” workshop in Chester.
