Alert: Water Line Insurance Advertising: Residents are receiving a letter from HomeServe Insurance company that begins, Proctorsville homeowners may not be aware that they are responsible for the water service line on their property.” While this may appear to look like an official or governmental document, it is not and town manager Rich Svec has made it clear that the town does not endorse this company. PFD Receives VT Homeland Security Grant: We have once again been selected to receive a VT Homeland Security Grant for new radios. Our last award was in 2010 for 14 new handheld radios and 1 mobile radio totaling just under $9,000. This year for 2014 we requested and were awarded 20 new handheld radios, 14 new pagers and 6 mobile radios, totaling just over $24,000. This was a much-needed grant as our number of active volunteers has grown over the last couple of years creating a need. Since 2010 we have received nearly $330,000 in grants to purchase equipment. We also have 1 more grant out for new air packs and a Thermal Imaging Camera totaling almost $70,000. We should hear about the results of that grant by the end of the year.

VT Police Warn of Counterfeit Cash: VT State police State police report that counterfeit $50 and $100 bills have been turning up for the past several weeks, mainly along the Interstate 91 corridor. Police say the bills in these cases are older in appearance and do not have many of the security features in newer bills. Store clerks may be able to detect the feel of the paper or the lack of a raised texture seen in real cash. And police say many stores will mark bills they receive with an iodine-based pen; that reacts to the starch in the paper. If the bill is fake the ink turns a dark blue or black. 2. CEMETERY TOUR & OTHER CHS FALL EVENTS: The Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) will hold its annual cemetery tour on Sunday, October 12 at 2 pm. Thanks to the efforts of Kem and Svetlana Phillips, the gravestones were cleaned this summer so it’s possible to read the inscriptions of such former Cavendish residents as Tarbell and Chubb. Along with the private burial plot of the Coffeen family, this is the oldest cemetery in Cavendish and contains the graves of a number of Revolutionary soldiers and first settlers.
Many of the grave markers are made of slate and show the funerary art of the late 1700s and early 1800s. Urn images decorate a number of markers, which emphasized the mourning of those left behind. Weeping willow trees were another popular image and again focused on the mourning and sadness of those left behind.
This is a free event and suitable for old ages. Tour participants should meet at the Museum at 2 pm in order to car pool to the cemetery. Be prepared for a short hike up a hill. This is also the last day the Museum will be open-2-4pm- for the summer season.
Please note that rubbings are not allowed at this cemetery due to the condition of the stones.

• Dias de los Muertos Workshop (Day of the Dead): Nov. 1 is our annual Dias de los Muertos workshop, from 3-5 at the Gethsemane Episcopal Church off of Depot Street. Half way between fall and winter solstice, many cultures believe this is a time when those who have died return to visit the living. Our focus is on the South American customs, particularly Mexico. Activities include: Sand painting, skull cookie decorating; sugar skull decorating (they're made of plaster); papel picado (Mexican paper cut banners); paper flowers; and creation of a community altar. This is a free event but donations are appreciated.
• Fall Supper and Sale: Nov. 8 is the first of what we hope will be a tradition of an annual fall supper and sale. The menu will include pork roast, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegan option for main dish, green beans, butternut squash, applesauce, homemade biscuits, dessert (crisps, pies and ice cream) Gluten free options. Sale items, beside the normal CHS books and photographs, we will also be selling some of the “crickets” wooden kneelers from the Cavendish Stone Church. Cost is $10 for Adults, $5 for children under 12 and free for children under 6.

3. FIRST ANNUAL YOGI MCNAMARA MEMORIAL RUN FEST: Yogi (Roger) McNamara was the guidance counselor for the River Valley Technical Center in Springfield and lived in Proctorsville for 28 years. He could often be seen running the roads around town. Yogi died Oct. 22, 2013 and with his passion for running, as well as youth, it is fitting that “Yogi’s Young Runners” was established.
The first Annual Yogi McNamara Memorial Run Fest to benefit “Yogi's Young Runners" will be held on Nov. 1, 2014 and will include three races. Start times and trails are as follows:
• 10K Race: Starts at 9 am across from the Cavendish Town Hall. Race will begin on Mill St., and proceed over bridge and under train trestle, turning left onto Cavendish Gulf Rd.. Will continue to a right hand turn onto Densmore Rd. and proceed to a left onto Perley Brown Rd. into Proctor Piper State Forest. Runners will turn right onto Pratt Hill Rd., and follow through State Forest, to Depot St., turning left. Route will turn right onto Greven Rd., then right onto RT 103, and finish into the Greven Field driveway.
• 5k Race: Begins at 10:30 am at Greven Field and will enter RT 103, turning left, and proceeding to a left onto Greven Rd., and at end, left onto Depot St. At RT 131, runners will turn left, continuing to intersection or RT 131 and 103, turning left, finishing with a left onto Greven Field driveway.
• Kids Fun Run: Begins at 11:30 am and will be entirely on the Greven Field Nature Trail.
Food and drink will be available at the Greven Field Snack Shack immediately following races. Race applications will be online; there will also be race day registration available. 4. GREVEN FIELD FALL CLEAN UP: Baseball has long past and soccer is coming to a close, so it is time to put Greven Field to bed for the winter.
On Sunday, October 19th, rain date the 26th, at 10:00 a.m., we will be cleaning up the fields and all areas. The park is in good shape, but many hands will make light work of the chores needed to have it ready for the spring. There will be a BBQ for all workers, maybe a little family soccer or softball, weather permitting.
Please bring leaf rakes, shovels, edgers and a wheelbarrow, if possible. We will be at it for a while, so just come when you can!

5. YOUR MONEY 101: Black River Good Neighbor Services, Inc. has teamed up with Berkshire Bank to offer a free interactive learning session on managing personal finances. The first meeting will be on Wednesday, October 29th at 6:00 p.m. and will be held at the United Church, corner of Pleasant and Elm Streets in Ludlow.
The evening will include childcare and a pizza dinner for all participants. The program will cover a variety of finance related topics including budgeting, checking account management, and interest – how to earn it and how not to pay it. There will be more topics if time permits and there is no prerequisite training required.
The program is free and pre-registration is not required, but for planning purposes the staff requests that you please let them know if you plan to attend. 6. EVENTS: Saturday is the 5th Annual Singleton’s Cook Off and Sunday is the last day the Cavendish Historical Society Museum will be open. This year’s annual cemetery tour (Sunday at 2 pm) will be to the Old Revolutionary Cemetery. Monday is Columbus Day and the town office, as well as other state and federal offices, and the schools will be closed. The monthly select board meeting will be on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 6:30 pm at the town office. An agenda will be posted to The Dish as soon as it’s received.
