REMEMBERING 9/11: Today marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11. At 5:00 PM, area firefighters are holding a day of Remembrance and Tribute to those who lost their lives. The March begins at Pond/West Hill Intersection in Ludlow with the ceremony at Veteran’s Park at 5:30 pm.
Mike Donovan, who worked at Okemo for a number of years as a Safety Ambassador, has recently written a book about his experiences on 9/11. Listen to an interview with him by clicking here. or watch the interview he did with Okemo Valley TV.

SATURDAY: The new Fletcher Farm network ( 611 Route 103) grand opening -offers trails built for mountain biking that are also open to other non-motorized recreation, such as hiking, nature walks and cross-country skiing. Begins at 10 am.
SUNDAY: Annual Phineas Gage Walk and Talk. Meet at the CHS Museum at 2 pm. The talk portion is first and takes place regardless of weather. Wear comfortable shoes. The site of the accident is ¾ of a mile from the Museum. FMI: 802-226-7808 or margocaulfield@icloud.com

1. BLACK RIVER WALK & TALK: National Flood Awareness Week is Sept. 20-26. To kick things off, the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS), Black River Action Team (BRAT), & the Dartmouth Rural Rivers Project are teaming up for a program on the history & health of the Black River, what’s being done to help mitigate flooding. This program includes a site visit to Greven field in Proctorsville and a medicinal plant walk with herbalist and medical anthropologist, Dr. Charis Boke. Dr. Boke has an academic appointment at Dartmouth College where she teaches and conducts research.
Meet at the CHS Museum, 1958 Main St., (Route 131) at 2 pm to carpool to Greven Field. This event is free, open to the public and takes place rain or shine. FMI: 802-226-7807 or margocaulfield@icloud.com
2. PREPAREDNESS TIPS FOR THE WEEK OF SEPT 7th: For the 2026 list of tips, as well as the Black River Valley Resources (BRVR) handout “Emergency Preparedness,” click here. This week’s tips include
• Know Vermont’s Natural Hazards and how to prepare for them: Erosion, flooding, drought, infectious disease, heat, cold, wind, invasive species, snow, ice, wildfire and hail. VT Emergency Preparedness
• Prep Your Phone: Your smartphone is one of your best tools in an emergency. Set it up so it can work for you when you most need it.
• Watch Basic First Aid Training
• Stockpile a minimum of a 3-5 day supply of non-perishable food for short term emergencies. Store at least 1 gallon of water per person per day.

• Cavendish Planning Commission and Development Review Board Minutes: Unapproved minutes from last week’s Planning Commission Meeting and Development Review Board are at the town’s website. The Planning Commission discussed the annual Town Plan update and the town’ planning grant application. The DRB approved the application of Ann Marie Veysey to change a major subdivision to a minor subdivision siting portions of the town’s subdivision regulations.

• Facilitators chosen for Act 170 school merger talks to begin in October: The Vermont Learning Collaborative announced on Friday the names of the seven Act 170 facilitators who will guide school districts in evaluating the possibility of voluntary school mergers between now and Sept. 1, 2027. The facilitators for our area is Dana Brown – Southeast Region: Brown is an educator from the Boston area with 46 years of experience in the classroom and as a principal. He was the 2016 Massachusetts Principal of the Year. The Southeast Region is comprised of Springfield Supervisory District and the supervisory unions of Mountain Views, Two Rivers, Windham Central, Windham Northeast, Windham Southeast, Windham Southwest and Windsor Southeast. • Public Utility Commission approves 5.5% rate increase for Green Mountain Power: Regulators have approved a 5.5% rate increase for customers of Green Mountain Power, the state’s largest electric utility. Ratepayers will see the increase on their bills starting in October. VT Public
