1.TOWN OF CAVENDISH COMMUNITY SURVEY:: This survey gathers input from residents and property owners to guide the Town of Cavendish's long-term planning goals, priorities and investments. A central focus is to maintain the rural character of Cavendish, continue it's working landscape and preserve it's natural and cultural resources-including open spaces, farms, forests and scenic areas--while balancing thoughtful growth with community needs. Your feedback will help shape policies that protect what makes Cavendish unique while planning for it's future.
Input is welcomed from all members of the Cavendish community including residents of both Cavendish and the Village of Proctorsville, renters, business owners, and non-resident property owners.

2. REQUESTS FOR PROPOSALS: The Town of Cavendish is seeking bids from qualified contractors for energy improvements to the Town Office, Wastewater Treatment Plant and Water Filtration Plant, and for ADA improvements to the Town Office. The Request for Bids and related plans and specifications can be found on the Mount Ascutney Regional Commission’s website under “Grants & RFPs.” A walk-through is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, starting at 9:00 AM at the Town Office (37 High Street in Cavendish). The deadline for bid submissions is Friday, September 4, at 4:00 PM.
3. TIMBER SALE ON KNAPP POND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department will be conducting a timber sale on the Knapp Brook Wildlife Management Area beginning in the late summer of 2026 and lasting for approximately six to eight weeks. This timber sale is prescribed in a long range management plan developed for the propertyand is scheduled to occur in Units 2 and 3 of the “Evens Lot” accessed via Moriglioni Road in Cavendish.
The primary objective of this work is to protect and enhance important wildlife habitats including wetlands, deer wintering areas, hard mast stands (i.e., red oak), and young forest habitats. The secondary goal of this management activity is the maintenance of winter-time recreation activities on the VAST trail which serves as the primary access for the timber sale, the sustainable production of high quality timber, and the enhancement of low-impact recreational opportunities such as hunting and wildlife viewing.
These objectives will be met by the implementation of thinning and small patch cut practices focused on the removal of declining softwoods (i.e., red spruce and balsam fir) and at risk hardwoods (i.e., American beech, ash and other poorly formed hardwoods) and the retention of healthy eastern hemlock, white pine, red oak and sugar maple. Recent past similar forest management practices on the Evens Lot have yielded excellent results leaving the forest more diverse, healthy and productive for wildlife while maintaining and improving access for recreationists.

• Congratulations to Abe Gross: The Ludlow Rotary Club honored several outstanding individuals for their dedicated service, leadership, and philanthropy. The 2026 Ludlow Rotary Community Service Awards, bestowed upon long-time community champions George Benson Jr. and Pastor Abraham Gross of Cavendish. Pastor Abraham "Abe" Gross was honored for his tireless advocacy, emergency response efforts, and deep-rooted volunteerism across the region. Serving as Pastor of his church and Assistant Chief of the Cavendish Fire Department, Pastor Gross wears many hats in service to his neighbors.
• CHS Summer Newsletter: The Cavendish Historical Society. (CHS) Summer 2026 newsletter is now available on-line. This issue includes an historical timeline of the Black River as well as calendar of events.
• Southern Vermont nonprofit for older volunteers shutters due to federal funding cuts: Green Mountain RSVP operated in Windsor, Windham and Bennington counties and was one of four programs in Vermont to manage the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Erica Walch, Green Mountain RSVP’s former director, said they oversaw nearly 300 volunteers working in local schools and hospitals, delivering meals and teaching fitness and strength training classes. Closing was the result of loosing federal funding. VT Public
