Request for Information from the VT State Police Regarding Car Accident on 103: On 11/01/2017 at approximately 11:22 am, members of the Vermont State Police, Westminster Barracks were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on VT Route 103 in Cavendish, VT. During the investigation, it was determined Vehicle #1(Andrew Gould) was traveling north on VT Route 103 when the driver reported he became distracted. Vehicle #1 departed the northbound lane, traveling across the southbound lane of VT Route 103, departing the roadway, traveling down an embankment and colliding with a section of trees. Vermont State Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Proctorsville Fire Department and Ludlow Rescue Squad. Cavendish Residents in the News: The Valley News has a nice article on Cavendish resident Sara Rose who works in Springfield helping families including those where addiction is a major issue. Okemo Mountain resort posted to Facebook a video of Andy Leven of Old Cavendish Products making fruitcakes.
Notice of Tax Sale: Cavendish will hold a public auction on properties where there is unpaid taxes or municipal utility fees on Dec. 7 at 1 pm at the Cavendish Town Office. Listed properties appear in the VT Journal, which is the town’s paper of record, under legal notices. There are five properties listed.
Mack Molding Adds “Largest Press in New England: Mack Molding has invested more than $1 million at its Cavendish plant with a 2360-ton Haitian press having a 268-oz shot capacity and ability to handle 40,000-lb molds. “While our southern division (located in Inman, S.C., and Statesville, N.C.) has long been lauded for its capabilities in large-part molding, our new Cavendish press represents expanded ground for the northern team,” said Jeff Somple, Mack president. Because of the increase in mold sizes that the new press can handle, Mack also upgraded the crane system in Cavendish and added a robot to handle large parts. Plastics Technology

Remembering Robert De Cormier: While not a Cavendish resident, Bob DeCormier was a supporter of the town where his daughter Robin Timko and son-in-law George Timko live and operate Crows Bakery. He not only attended various events, but brought his group Counterpoint to perform for one of CCCA’s fundraisers. DeCormier, composer, musician and arranger of choral music, died earlier this week. Our sympathies to his family, friends and those who were inspired by his music.
Hunters Asked to Help Collect Deer Biological Data: The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is asking hunters for help in a statewide initiative to gather more biological data on the state’s deer population. Hunters who get a deer during the Nov. 11-26 rifle season are asked to provide an incisor tooth from their deer when they go to a reporting station. Biologists are collecting middle incisor teeth from all rifle season deer in order to evaluate regional differences in ages and antler characteristics of bucks as well as to help estimate population size, growth rate, health, and mortality rates. Each tooth will be cross-sectioned to accurately determine the deer’s age, and the results will be posted on the Fish & Wildlife website next spring. Instructions on removing the tooth will be posted at reporting stations, and a video showing how will be available on Fish & Wildlife’s website.
How Chinese Politics Are Mixed in With Your Recycling: As discussed at last month’s Select Board Meeting, recyclable materials are one of the US's major exports and a lot of our "stuff" goes to China. Recent policy changes coming out of Beijing are aimed at restricting what material comes from the United States. That's having a major effect on the US waste system and will have a direct impact at our local transfer station particularly in the area of mixed paper. Learn the importance of following recycling guidelines on this special program from VPR’s Vermont Edition.
2. FREE THANKSGIVING DINNER: On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23rd from 12 Noon- 2 PM, there will be a Thanksgiving Dinner at the Cavendish Elementary School. Hosted by St. James United Methodist Church, everyone is welcome to attend the dinner. It’s a great time to sit down, relax and enjoy a delicious, home-cooked holiday meal, free-of-charge. The event is an outreach program of Black River Good Neighbor Services entitled “Our Community Cares”, established for individuals and families to receive a free, nutritious meal within a warm, welcoming community setting. 3. HOLIDAY FAIRS IN PROCTORSVILLE: There will be two local holiday fairs. The first, to be held on Nov. 18 (Saturday) from 9-3, will be The Holy Name of Mary Altar Society’s "Winter Berries and Food Sale .” This will take place at the church hall at 803 Main Street in Proctorsville, VT. The Cavendish Baptist Church sponsors this yearly event where boxes with gifts that bring smiles to children's faces and Operation Christmas Child delivers these boxes in time for Christmas. Boxes and gifts are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own gifts to pack or make a shipping donation. NOVEMBER 13-18 (MONDAY-SATURDAY) The Cavendish Fletcher Community Library will be holding it's annual Scholastic Bookfair from 11/13/-11/18 during normal library hours. This event is open to the public and features titles for sale from preschool through middle school. Proceeds benefit the annual Summer Reading Program. The fair has a wild west theme, and will feature some fun games and prizes throughout the week and end with "Clifford's Round Up" on Saturday from 1:00-3:00. This event is open to the public. CHS Briefs: Catch up on the latest news of the Cavendish Historical Society by reading the November CHS Briefs.
GM Girls Soccer Team in State Finals: With an incredible season of 16 wins and no losses or ties, Green Mountain Union High School’s girls varsity soccer team goes for the state championship on Saturday, Nov. 4, 10 am at Bellows Falls High School.
Deer Season Start’s Nov. 11: Hunters are gearing up for the start of Vermont’s traditionally popular 16-day rifle deer season that begins Saturday, Nov. 11 and ends Sunday, Nov. 26. A hunter may take one buck during this season with at least one antler having two or more points one inch or longer. A point must be one inch or longer from base to tip. The main beam counts as a point, regardless of length. Spike-antlered deer, mostly yearlings, are protected during this season. Vermont’s regular hunting licenses, including a November rifle season buck tag and a late season bear tag cost are available on Fish & Wildlife’s website and from license agents statewide. A 2017 Vermont Deer Hunting Guide can be downloaded from the department’s website at www.vtfishandwildlife.com.
2. THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS RAPIDLY APPROACHING: It doesn’t seem possible after the extended summer weather, but the calendar and changing temps assure us that it is November and Thanksgiving is less than three weeks away. Yes it’s a bit earlier this year. To help prepare for the holiday season ahead, think locally:
• OMS Annual Ski & Snowboard Swap: Nov. 17-19 (Friday-Sunday) at the Okemo Base Lodge. Great opportunity to purchase new and nearly new snow gear for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or just braving the elements. FMI
• PTO Pie Sale: On November 17 (Friday), a pie sale for Cavendish Town Elementary School PTO will take place at Singleton’s in Proctorsville and Brewfest in Ludlow.
• Murdock’s on the Green in Proctorsville is not serving dinner, but has a “Thanksgiving to Go” package with a turkey and traditional fixings that can be picked up on Thanksgiving Day up to 11:30 a.m. These must be ordered in advance. 3. WOOD HEAT WORKSHOP IN CAVENDISH: Learn about the new clean burning technologies for heating residential and small commercial buildings with Vermont’s local, renewable fuel. The Cavendish Energy Committee will hold a free workshop on Tuesday, November 14, at 6:00 p.m. in the Cavendish town office meeting room, 37 High Street in Cavendish.

Emma Hanson, a specialist in wood heat from Vermont’s Dept. of Forests, Parks and Recreation, will give an overview of the latest clean burning systems, from wood boilers and high efficiency furnaces to pellet stoves and efficient fireplaces. She will also discuss the boost we can give to local economies by using Vermont trees. Bill Buswell 1930-1917: It is with sadness that we report the passing of Bill Buswell. A former Selectmen, Bill (William) Buswell was a much-loved member of the Cavendish community, as was reflected in comments left by many on the Cavendish VT Facebook page. “He is with his Nancy now. Such a nice human being.” “A lovely man and a wonderful neighbor.” “A kind, thoughtful family. Bill and Nancy gave so much to the community. They were part of a rare breed.” “A Great Guy!” “He was a very good man.” Vermont Journal
Crash at Neal’s on 103: On 10/26/17 at approximately 7:49 pm, Daniel Vieu of Cavendish was operating a 2010 Dodge Avenger traveling north on Vermont Route 103, in the Town of Cavendish, VT. Vieu’s vehicle left the roadway and traveled a large distance across the open lawn in front of Neil’s Restaurant. Vieu’s vehicle collided with Neil’s Restaurant causing serious damage to the building and the vehicle. Vieu sustained serious non-life threatening injures and was transported to Springfield Hospital and later to Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital. Vieu was processed for suspected DUI. Charges are pending the receipt of blood test results. No employees or patrons at Neil’s restaurant were injured as a result of the crash. VSP Report
Cavendish Homeworkers Club II to Disband: The Cavendish Homeworkers Club II voted at their September 20th, 2017 meeting to disband. This club has been a part of the Cavendish/Proctorsville community for close to 100 years. It started in 1920 as a sewing circle. In 1921 they joined the Farm Bureau and became one of the earliest Home Demonstration Clubs. In 1990 it was voted to withdraw from membership in the Windsor County Council. The club still met as a local club. This club has donated to many projects in our community. President, Paula Parker
Congratulations to GM Girls Soccer: Finishing with an undefeated regular season, Green Mountain Girls soccer team, the top seed, has already won the first game of the Division III playoffs. Their next game is Saturday, 1 pm at GMUHS.
Congratulations to Bob Evens and Ann Firkey: Eleven senior citizens from southern Vermont were recognized on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at the Senior Solutions Annual Meeting and 2017 Successful Aging Awards in Springfield. Among them were Cavendish’s Bob Evens and Ann Firkey. Robert “Bob” Evens of Cavendish was nominated by Audrey Bridges. Evens has been an RSVP volunteer for 20 years, and volunteers for Black River Good Neighbor Services, the Cavendish Library, fire department, Fletcher Foundation, and anyone in need. Bridges said Evans is diligent, dedicated, and creative, and the definition of a good neighbor. Ann Firkey was nominated by Cheryl Gurdak, who was her student in the third and fourth grade in the 1950s. Firkey taught elementary school for 34 years, and after retirement she continued to substitute for four years. Firkey is devoted to her family, church and education. She is an active member of the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church for more than 50 years, and the Ladies Altar Society. She has coordinated the Ludlow Antique Show church fundraiser for 25 years, and is an active planner with the town of Cavendish for events, and coordinates funeral receptions. She winters in San Jose, California with her family and granddaughter. Eagle Times

State Oks Mt Holly-Ludlow Merger: Having been approved by the State Board of Education on Oct. 18, the latest proposal that would merge the Mt. Holly and Ludlow school districts moves forward to a Nov. 28 vote. If passed, the merger would create the Ludlow-Mt. Holly Unified Union School District combining the three districts that operate the schools in those towns now. And while each town would continue to operate its elementary school, Black River High School would have to close by July 2020. After that date, the new district would pay tuition for students in Grades 7 to 12 to attend other schools including Mill River in Clarendon and Green Mountain Union in Chester. The 18-month reprieve for Black River provides time for a community group to apply to the state of Vermont to become an independent school which would be able to accept tuition students. VT Health Connect Prices Will Not Change in 2018: The state’s top health care regulator says insurance prices on Vermont Health Connect will remain steady for calendar year 2018, despite recent actions at the federal level. Kevin Mullin the chair of the Green Mountain Care Board, said Monday that the board would not allow insurance companies to raise premiums for plans effective in calendar year 2018 even though the federal government is holding back subsidies for the health exchange that will likely increase costs for insurance companies. 2. PLEASE CTES HAS AN IMMEDIATE NEED FOR A BUS DRIVER: CTES will lose their school bus driver effective Monday, Nov. 6. This creates a serious problem as there is such a shortage of school bus drivers not only in Vermont but in the country. Unfortunately, if a driver isn’t found, parents will have to figure out alternative ways to get children to and from CTES.

3. GOT DRUGS? RECYCLE THEM PROPERLY: With the ongoing opioid crisis, it is important to recognize that the path of addiction can start for a teen who finds a partially used bottle of prescription medications and “just tries” it. Unfortunately, addiction can occur just that quickly. In addition, unused medications that are tossed down the drain get into the water supply.
If you have unused or expired medication, these can be safely disposed of at the Ludlow or Springfield Police stations year round. However, this coming Saturday, Oct. 28 is National Take Back Day. While neither of these sites take needles, the Claremont locations will be taking needles this coming Saturday. Learn more from the video “Drug Take Back.”
