Improve Cell Coverage with Wi-Fi Calling

In continuing to look for solutions to the reduced cell coverage in Cavendish due to the G4 upgrade, check and see if your iPhone or smart phone has Wi-Fi Calling capability.

Instead of relying on the cellular phone network, WI-FI calling and texting uses an available Wi-Fi network to place your call over the Internet. This can be very handy when there isn’t a signal or it’s spotty at best-perfect for our rural area. It can also work if you are traveling in other countries. In fact for AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile & Sprint there is free international Wi-Fi Calling services via iOS 9.3 update for iPhones.

Wi-Fi calling is not new as apps like Skype, Google Hangouts, FaceTime, Google Voice, Line, Skype and WeChat allow users to make voice and video calls and send text messages over the Internet, forgoing mobile networks altogether. As this option has become increasingly more beneficial to users, cell carriers have shown increasing interest in adopting Wi-Fi calling themselves. Whether it's because they want to bolster their network coverage or improve user experience, but it’s looking more and more like the next cellular upgrade (G5) will be via the Internet. However, G5 isn’t expected until 2020.

Wi-Fi calling isn’t automatically enabled and it’s also not available on all phones. Start by checking your phone to see if it has this feature. To turn yours on, go to the Settings menu.

- On iPhones (5s and above) go to Settings > Phone and then toggle on Wi-Fi calling.

- On Android, you’ll generally find Wi-Fi settings under Settings > Networks > Call, where you can then toggle on Wi-Fi calling.

Once you activate Wi-Fi calling, you dial or text as usual. The routing of your call or text is handled automatically in the background.

While all of the major carriers -Sprint, T-Mobile, AT& T and Verizon- offer some form of Wi-Fi Calling there are limitations so definitely check with the company you use. At this time, US Cellular does not offer this feature.

The Wi-Fi connection speed will make a difference, but fortunately for many in Cavendish the minimum is 1Mbps.

This is a changing field, and there is new information on this topic nearly every month, so check periodically to see if this is a feature that can improve cell service.

6TH ANNUAL TOWN WIDE TAG SALE 7/30/16

Tag Sale logo.jpg

Note: Starting July 22, we will be posting pictures of items that will be for sale on Saturday, July 30 at the Cavendish VT Facebook page. If you would like an item listed, photo etc., please e-mail cavendishconnects@gmail.com

The 6th Annual Town-Wide Tag Sale will be held on Saturday July 30, 2016 from 9-3

The Cavendish Town Wide Tag Sale began in 2011 as part of the town’s 250th anniversary’s yearlong celebration. Because it was such a hit, Cavendish Connects has continued to sponsor it.

There are a few changes this year, with the biggest one being that vendors from surrounding towns will be able to purchase booth space on the village greens for a fee of $15. Non-residents interested in learning more about this opportunity need to call 802-226-7807 or e-mail cavendishconnects@gmail.com

It takes quite a bit of time to coordinate this event, therefore we are asking the Cavendish community to help support Cavendish Connects by making a donation now, the day of the sale or shortly thereafter, which can be done from the CC’s donation page

VENDORS The sale will be concentrated along Main Street (Route 131), with both village greens available to Cavendish/Proctorsville residents, property owners, businesses and community groups for free. Please register if you are interested in space on one of the greens.

•  Anyone setting up on a village green is responsible for bringing all supplies and removing all trash and items that did not sell by the end of the day.

• Secondary areas will be off High Street in Cavendish Village and Route 103, Twenty Mile Stream and Depot Street in Proctorsville.

• The on-line site for information and vendors will be updated weekly

• There will be no printed addresses or maps this year (just what appears below in the Stop, Shop & Eat section) so those along High Street, Route 103, Twenty Mile or other areas should think about signage.

• The familiar red poster boards will go up two weeks before the event.

Those who wish to register for space at the Greens, or have their site listed on the vendor list (on-line) should send an e-mail to cavendishconnects@gmail.com or call 802-226-7807. Please note that the more information you can provide about what you have for sale, the more shoppers you will attract.

1. CAVENDISH RELATED NEWS
Sharon Huntley’s Mission to Stop Distracted Drivers: As part of Distracted Drivers month, Cavendish resident Sharon Huntley was interviewed by WCAX in the hope that it will remind others to avoid the mistake that took her son Spencer's life at 18 years of age. Spencer was killed at the intersection of 103 and Depot Street in Proctorsville on Oct. 31, 2011. Sharon talks to groups about her experience. "When you lose someone that dynamic, it leaves a really big hole and I'd hate to have another parent go through that," said Huntley. Thank you Sharon for having the courage to do this.

Congratulations to Jace Provance on his Bronze Medal Win: Freestyle skier, PVFD Junior Fire Fighter, GMUHS junior and Proctorsville resident Jace Provance recently took the bronze medal in Skiercross at the USASA National Championships. Congratulations Jace on a job well done!

Local’s Special at the Jackson Gore Spring House: In honor of April vacations, residents of Ludlow and the surrounding towns can use the Spring House at Jackson Gore for a discounted rate of $9 a person/day! Special pricing begins April 16 and ends April 24.

Open Burning and Weather Awareness: As Vermont dries out from winter each year, a new hazard often presents itself for spring. Dead grass, leaves, and brush can become prime fuel for wild land and brushfires, particularly when dried out under sunshine, low relative humidity, and just two or three rain free days in a row. The National Weather Service reports those conditions are expected this coming weekend. The National Weather Service; the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation; Green Mountain National Forest; and Vermont Department of Public Safety remind the public to exercise caution and follow local ordinances in regards to open burning this weekend and at any time when wild land and brushfire fire risks are elevated. Mid to late spring is considered the peak fire season in Vermont, with 75% of all fires during a given year typically occurring in April and May. Open burns can get out of control quickly in dry conditions like Vermont is seeing now, and it becomes even more hazardous if winds are blowing.

2. INTRODUCTION TO THE ART OF MAKING STONE TOOLS WORKSHOP The Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) is thrilled to host archeologist Charlie Paquin for another stellar workshop. CHS volunteers met Charlie while working on the Paleo Indian dig at Jackson Gore. A legendary Vermont “flint knapper,” Charlie has done workshops at the Museum as well as led an archaic Indian dig in Cavendish.

On June 5th (Sunday), from 1-4 pm, Charlie will be teaching “Introduction to Flint-Knapping” at the CHS Museum, 1958 Main St (Route 131) in Cavendish. He will demonstrate how the Paleo and Archaic Indians made projectile points (arrow heads) and other tools used for hunting and daily life. Participants will learn to make the simpler tools at this workshop. The cost is $25 per person and includes all materials and supplies.

Participants must pre register by May 27 (Friday), as the class size is limited. To pre register, call 802-226-7807 or e-mail margoc@tds.net You can also send a check for $25 to CHS, PO Box 472, Cavendish VT 05142

4. CCCA SOLICITING PHOTOS FOR ANNUAL CONTEST
Cavendish residents, it’s time to think about which photograph you would like to submit for next year's calendar. Every year the Cavendish Community and Conservation Association solicits Cavendish residents for photographs to grace its community calendar. The community then gets to pick the twelve best submissions for the calendar. Photos must show scenes and landscapes in Cavendish and Proctorsville that are valuable for their beauty, historic significance and overall importance to the community. Pictures can include people or animals. The purpose of the calendar is to bring a greater appreciation and sense of pride about the town, which is the foundation of conservation and good stewardship.

There are three age categories and the best picture in each category also receives an award and a prize. If you have ever felt inclined to take a picture of a sight that you appreciate in Cavendish or Proctorsville, please consider submitting it for the 2017 calendar.

You must submit an 8" by 10" photo in a horizontal layout, along with your name, the name you give the picture and the general location of where the photo was taken. Submissions of digital copies on a disk are encouraged. Photos will be accepted from May 1st until May 31st. Application forms will be available beginning May 1st at the Cavendish Town Office, at Cavendish Elementary School and at Crows Bakery on Depot Street, and they can be found now on our website at www.cavendishccca.org. Please contact Robin at 802-226-7736 if you have questions.

5. CAVENDISH GREEN-UP NEEDS YOU!
One of the most scenic and secluded back roads of Cavendish has become a dumping ground for trash, turning the end of Perley Brown road into an eyesore. Piles of old tires, broken bottles, beer cans, household appliances, logging debris, discarded TVs and other assorted junk greet those who venture to the end of the road that was once home to a farm. With Vermont Green Up Day fast approaching on Saturday May 7, there is an opportunity for community volunteers with some muscle who want to tackle this site. And for those who want to join up and collect litter along our town's beautiful roads, there will be plenty of opportunities to do that.

The tradition of Vermont Green Up Day, now in its 46th year, unites communities, raises environmental awareness, and results in cleaner roads and town spaces for all. The big sweep begins at the Proctorsville Green on May 7 at 9 a.m., where you can register and pick up special green trash bags, protective gloves and your user-friendly road assignment. The cleanup ends at noon with a free town-sponsored barbecue on the Green. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be on the grill and folks are invited to bring a side dish to share, though it's not required. In case of rain, Green Up Day will be held on Saturday May 14. FMI Diane McNamara at the Town Office at 226-7292.

6. EVENTS
