Preparedness Instructions

East Rd Beaver Pond Outing Oct. 18

From Pieter van Schaik:

Last week I finally acquired two flat bottomed aluminum row boats and took a boat out on the  beaver pond yesterday with a smalI group. It was a bit of a hassle wending our way from the shore through the felled trees in the pond but in 1/2 hour we were cruising in open water.

Much of the beaver pond is covered with lily pads and they do make rowing more strenuous even with just three people in the boat. For this reason I have acquired two boats so that a small group of up to six people can be accommodated at any one time. Each boat has seating capacity for six people but that is too much weight for a leisurely outing on the beaver pond. Eventually we encountered a second species of lily pad and hundreds of salamanders .Years ago I saw two otters in the great blue heron rookery area but I have not been on the water enough to learn what fish, if any, are present.

My plan is to construct a small structure near the boat launch site for storage of oars and life jackets secured with a combination padlock with the same combination for that lock as for the locks securing the boats to trees with 3/8 chain. Each club member will be given the combination and will be able to access the beaver pond waters any time at their convenience. How workable this plan will prove to be remains to be seen.

The site I have finally selected for boat launch is a channel excavated by the beavers themselves located just 75 ft over flat terrain from the parking area under the Velco transmission line off East Rd. west of Caton Place camp ground. People are free to access the pond with their own boats with no motors and life jackets . Boating is restricted to post bird nesting season, which until further notice is set to begin on August 15.

Sunday ,Oct 18 from 9 AM -3 pm , if it is not raining, the two row boats and a canoe will be available on a pre registration basis by calling me, prior to Sat Oct 17 at 5 PM, and leaving a message with return phone number at 226 -7374.

This event is free and open to the general public.

In August Pieter conducted a tour of his nature preserve, including beaver pond. To see pictures of the preserve and the pond, go to The Dish.

Cheerios Recall: General Mills is recalling nearly 2 million boxes of plain Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. The company says the cereal is labeled gluten-free, but actually contains wheat. The recall affects Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios made in July at the company's Lodi, California, plant. Go to the Cheerios website for more information.

IRS Scam Targets Vermonters: The Director of the VT Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance programs, Janet Murnane, says that nearly 2,000 Vermonters have already filed complaints this year about the IRS scam. At least four have been swindled, paying out up to $17,000. "If you talk with them, if you engage, if you call the call back number, they're just going to put you on the live list and continue to call you." She warns these overseas crooks are extremely convincing, offer ID numbers and typically have personal information about you. They use scare tactics, spoof police department phone numbers and prey on people's fears of faulty tax filings. If you really do owe the feds money, experts say the IRS will contact you by mail and won't require a specific payment method. If you get a call claiming you owe back taxes, hang up, call the IRS and report the incident to the AG's office. 2. CAVENDISH CONNECTS INTERNET SPEED SURVEY
Thank you if you have already taken the Cavendish Internet Speed Survey, as it will provide data that’s needed to help Cavendish qualify for Connectivity funding. If you haven’t taken the survey, please do so as it’s another step in helping to bring high speed Internet to the entire town.

This is a two-step process:

STEP 1: Before beginning this survey, please go to www.bandwidthplace.com to test your internet speed. After going to this site, click the word "Start" on the large orange odometer-like circle left-hand side of the screen. The site will test your speed and then give you a download and an upload speed. Please jot down these two numbers and enter them into the survey below.

STEP 2: Take the survey

We would like to conclude the survey by October 19, so please take a few minutes and check your bandwidth and then take the survey.

Thank you for your efforts and please email us at cavendishconnects@gmail.com with any questions!

 3. USING THE KONMARI METHOD FOR ABUNDANCE SWAP PREP
Does it seem like a number of people you know are reading or talking about“The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by the Japanese author Marie Kondo? Well part of it is the time of year-changing season means switching out clothes, lawn care etc. However, many are finding it a very easy way to de clutter and kept it that way.

In a nutshell, the idea is to only keep things that spark joy when you look at them or are necessary (e.g. medications, tax returns etc). The process is very straight forward. Gather all items in a similar category, such as clothes, books, or paper, regardless of where they appear in the house and put them in one location. Start sorting. When you pick up an object ask one question-does it spark joy? If it elicits no response up to and including “hate it,” discard it for recycling (Black River Good Neighbor or Fiber Barn at the transfer station), consignment shop, trash or save it for the 2nd Annual Cavendish Abundance Swap on Dec. 5.   Only gently used items for the Abundance Swap please.

Learn more about the KonMari method at The Dish.  If there is interest, Cavendish Connects will host a workshop in November on implementing this technique. If you are interested in such a workshop please e-mail cavendishconnects@gmail.com with dates and times that would be most convenient for you.

4. PIG ROAST TO BENEFIT CAVENDISH SNOW FLEAS
On Saturday, Oct 10 from 12:30-3 pm there will be a pig roast to raise funds for the Cavendish’s snow mobile club Green Mountain Snow Fleas. They are using funds for “Building a Home for our Tucker,”  the tucker being the machine they use for grooming VAST trails used for snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. There will be a Silent Auction and 50/50 raffle. Jamie’s Junk Show will provide musical entertainment. Tickets, available the day of the pig roast, are $15 for adults and children under 10 $5 and includes sides, soft drink & dessert-hot dogs and hamburgers for the kids. The roast will take place in the field next to Snow Country Snowmobiles, Winery Rd., Proctorsville. Rain Date Sunday Oct. 11. 5. RAISE THE ROOF CONCERTS RETURN THIS FALL
The popular locally-grown concert series that fills the cold weather months with music in downtown Proctorsville will return in October.  Now in its fourth year, Raise the Roof concerts will kick off the season with world class fiddler Lissa Schneckenburger, whose virtuoso playing of traditional music from New England and the British Isles will light up Gethsemane Episcopal Church on Sunday October 25.  She will be joined by Greg Boardman on fiddle and Bethany Waickman on guitar.  As they say in the British Isles, it will be "a crackin' good time."

On Sunday November 22, House Blend, one of Vermont's best a capella groups, will return with their eclectic mix of gospel, African, Eastern European, American folk and classical music.  These seasoned vocalists have energy and passion for singing that is contagious. Raise the Roof Concert: House Blend singing group, Nov. 22 (Sunday), 4 pm at Gethsemane Church in Proctorsville, off of Depot St. Admission $10.

After a break in December, the series will return with more great music as well as a special evening of live storytelling---a Vermont version of the popular Moth Radio Hour on National Public Radio.  This special event features local folks telling their stories without scripts---true tales that amuse, inspire and touch the heart.
