Depot Street, with covered bridge in the distance. Probably late 1800s.

On May 11 (Monday), at 6:30 pm, as part of the Cavendish Select Board’s (SB) regularly scheduled monthly meeting, there will a special meeting regarding the Depot St Bridge in Proctorsville, which is due for replacement in the next few years. The meeting will take place at the Cavendish Town Office (37 High Street, Cavendish).

Used as a connector between Route 131 (Main St) and Route 103, Depot Street and Bridge have been discussed frequently at SB meetings. Currently, the Bridge is closed to commercial traffic and has a tonnage limit. While this may be helping some with speeders, there are concerns about the need for noise quieting options

The purpose of this meeting is to provide an overview of the bridge replacement project to the SB, residents and businesses, emergency services and other interested parties. There will be a review of the existing site conditions, proposed work, potential detour, and overall schedule followed by a question and answer period. Representatives from both VTrans and the Town of Cavendish will be available to answer questions and address concerns. The preferred alternative includes a full bridge replacement with traffic maintained on an offsite detour during a road closure.

Water Update 4/7/15

According to town manager Rich Svec, the excessive demand for municipal water has ceased and water levels have returned to normal. Part of this would be due to the slowing down of the ski season and the extra usage by visitors. At least one property was found to have a broken water pipe, which has now been repaired. The town began water testing yesterday (Monday April 6) and it will take 3 days of water testing before the "boil water" notice can be lifted.

Note: At no time has the town's water supply tested positive for coliform.

If you wish to receive town notifications about the water, please send an e-mail to cavendishwaternotices@cavendishvt.org with "subscribe" in the subject heading.

As soon as we know the boil water notice has been lifted, Cavendish Connects will post this information to Facebook, Blog and the Cavendish Update.

Water Warning Update 4/3/15 Noon

The following is an update to the Cavendish Municipal Water Warning  required because the municipal well could not meet water demand (high usage and an undetected leak), necessitating drawing on the town’s secondary well. This well is in the permitting process.

Since a water system experiencing fluctuations in water pressure and/or a  distribution leak has a greater risk for bacteria and other harmful organisms, a “boil water” notice is required. The water is being tested more frequently, and continues to test negative for coliforms. However,  it is important that you not drink the water without boiling it first.

You may smell chlorine: In order to safeguard against bacteria in the water, more chlorine is being added at this time.

How long will this last? Even though it’s a Town holiday, staff is working to try and determine where the leak is. Once found, repairs will take place next week. Upon completion of the repair, three days of consistently negative coliform testing will be required before the "boil water" notice is lifted.

If you have recently had a break in your water pipes, such as a frozen pipe, or you are a second home owner that hasn't been here for a while, the Cavendish Water Dept. would like to hear from you. You can send an e-mail to cavendishconnects@gmail.com with relevant information.

Since not everyone has access to the Internet, please make a call to let neighbors and friends know of the current situation.

CONTINUE TO OBSERVE THE BOIL WATER NOTICE.
